Birmingham AIDS Outreach was founded in 1984. The Brother-to-Brother Program
was implemented at BAO in 1999 as part of the agency’s Prevention and Education Department.
BAO is a not-for-profit organization and operates under a variety of grants. The Brother-to-Brother Program was funded by a grant from the CDC through the Alabama Department of Public Health from 1999-2004. The program has had several small grants to assist with a portion of the cost such as Rich’s/Macy’s and HHRS, as well as donations from the Quest, but it is still not fully funded and is operated on a voluntary basis by the agency.
Brother-to-Brother collaborates and participates on several boards: Community Advisory Board, UAB 1917 Patient Advisory Board, Ryan White Consortium, and HIV Prevention Network to name a few.
